Chapter 25

Interstate 94, 30 miles southeast of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. 2:53 PM, CST.

Luis Rodriguez took a quick look at the weather app on his HTC mobile while there weren’t any vehicles too close in front. No snow in the forecast for the duration of his ride, just what he wanted to see. He hated winter. The cold, the ice, the snow, the strong crosswinds, all adversaries for a truck driver. Rodriguez didn’t have plans on doing this for a living, it was just a matter of taking whatever job he could get.

Rodriguez almost didn’t finish high school. He did a bunch of odd jobs such as a cashier at a fast-food joint and sold shoes in a sports store. He was promoted to store manager for two years before he got into an argument with a customer. That ended with him throwing her out of the store—all because she refused to put her shopping bags on the floor so that another customer could use the other half of the bench to try on a pair of shoes. He thought of getting a lawyer and suing the goddamn company for their blatant stupidity in siding with the bitch. However, his lawyer advised against it because the company would simply file appeal after appeal in order to drag out the case as long as they could, thus increasing the amount he’d be handing out in lawyer’s fees. In the end he’d end up starving himself before the case was eventually heard.

That was the problem with the people on top. They were so high up on their horses—counting dollar signs while worrying about the bad word-of-mouth publicity—that they’d sacrifice their own in order to appease one client.

Now he was a truck driver, working for Pepsi. The pay was pretty good. It got boring at times, but the bills were paid, although he was still way behind on his debts. That was the main reason why he took this extra route after one of his colleagues suddenly fell ill. Why the hell had he bet against Seattle in the Super Bowl? That bet lost him over two grand. Now he was stuck picking up as many of these extra shifts as possible if he hoped to break even.

His mobile rang—playing a personalized ringtone to his ex-girlfriend, Wendy. He would’ve removed her completely from his life had it not been for their son. Had it been up to her, Rodriguez would never have gotten to know his son, Jimmy. Wendy insisted on calling him James, and trying to get Jimmy to accept it as his real name. But Rodriguez knew that that was all about her trying to gain control over their son. For God’s sake, the kid was only five years old. Why’d she have to be doing this to him while he was at such a fragile age? In the meantime, Rodriguez wasn’t even interested in getting to know anyone else. A strip joint here and there from time to time was as far as he would go.
